What is interceptive orthodontics?

Interceptive orthodontics is a means of treating bite problems, as a child’s face, teeth and oral structures are developing. These bite problems, which are not self-correcting, can usually be successfully treated, greatly improving your child’s appearance, chewing efficiency and maintaining their attractive smile.

What are various ways of doing this?

The methods used in interceptive procedures include removable or fixed devices. Removable devices can be removed by the child or parent for cleaning in cases where the pediatric dentist wants the device to be worn only part of each day. However, fixed devices are attached to the teeth and adjusted or removed only by your pediatric dentist.

What dental problems require interceptive orthodontics?

Certain dental problems which require early intervention are- cross bite, open bite, deep bite, crowding of front teeth, oral habits such as mouth breathing, thumb/ finger sucking , tongue thrusting, bruxism and nail biting.

What happens if I do not undertake interceptive orthodontics procedure?

The severity of the problem may increase if the treatment of common bite problems is delayed. The child may end up with fixed braces or even require removal of few permanent teeth for correction of mal-aligned teeth.

What is the right age for interceptive orthodontics procedure?

The right age for interceptive orthodontic procedure is 5-8 years, although few problems may require an early correction. Also, it is never too late, so ask your pediatric dentist for any intervention even if your child is more than 8 years old.
