Dental Sealants

Pit and fissure is a form of preventive treatment advised on the permanent molars or teeth which have deep grooves and fissures.

How do sealants work?

Deep grooves and fissures are areas which are inaccessible by a toothbrush making them prone to cavities. Sealing of grooves and fissures prevents plaque accumulation in these narrow areas thereby preventing cavities.

What is the life expectancy of tooth sealants?

Sealants can last for many years. Sealants are checked on regular dental visits.

what is the procedure for placing sealants?

The procedure is simple and takes one visit for all molars. The tooth is cleaned, conditioned and dried. The sealant is then applied to the grooves of the teeth and hardened with a special blue light. The child can resume all normal activities directly after the appointment.

Do sealants lessen the need for brushing and flossing?

Definitely not! Sealant is a preventive treatment against tooth decay, so it is just as important for children to brush and floss their teeth after sealants are applied.
